Tanzania has three international airports, Dar es Salaam - Julius Nyerere International Airport (which handles most of the International flights), Kilimanjaro International Airport and Zanzibar International Airport. Mwanza Airport is under development to the international level but also handle few international flights and most domestic flights

Mwanza Airport
Mwanza Airport is the third busiest Airport in Tanzania after Julius Nyerere International Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport. Mwanza airport is the hub of air transport in the Great Lakes Region whereby it serves the Great Lakes countries of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as Domestic flights to and from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Bukoba, Shinyanga, Musoma, Tabora, Kigoma etc. Mwanza Airport is situated 10km from Mwanza City center North East with Aerodrome reference point 020 26' 38.86 "S 030 25' 554.96" E with elevation of 3,763 ft from sea level. Mwanza Airport is the nearest Airport to the world’s famous Serengeti National Park, the ‘Olduvai Gorge’ where fossils of the first man were found, the wonders of rocks (Bismarck rocks), the scenery, topography, game hunting, historical and archaeological ventures, Burigi National Park (Geita) Saanane Island National Park and very friendly people harbour the growth of excellent cultural tourism. Other tourist attractions include the Bujora Museum where Sukuma cultural history is preserved, and Lake Victoria itself with naturally arranged rocks set on top of each other. Lake Victoria is the largest of all African lakes, and is also the second widest freshwater body in the world. The above are the preferred Airports via Mwanza Airport, but you can always reach Mwanza by connecting flight from any destination in the World.

BY ROAD
From the north, paved roads connect the Kenyan capital of Nairobi with Arusha and cross the border at the Namanga post. A number of shuttle buses, leaving twice daily between the two cities, the trip takes approximately 4 - 6 hours. At Arusha you can get public service vehicle (buses) to Mwanza leaving in the morning (It is about 8 hours drive).
The other principle border crossing is south of Mombasa on the coast at Lunga Lunga, from where the nearest Tanzanian city is Tanga. There are quieter border crossings at Taveta, between Voi and Moshi. From Tanga or Moshi you can get a public bus to Mwanza.

Isebania/Sirari border the main road connecting between Kisumu Kenya and Mwanza.
From Kampala Uganda at the Mutukula border post to Mwanza, There is a number of public vehicle service running daily in this route, leaving in the morning, the trip takes approximately 14 hours.
Northwestern part of Tanzania, there is a border crossing with Rwanda at Rusomo, there are bus services between Kigali and Mwanza.

For road safety avoid driving at night.

Travel by rail
The route between Kapiri Moshi in Zambia and Dar es Salaam is ran by the Tanzania and Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) Tel: +255222862033, www.tazarasite.com. There is also a train from Dar es salaam to Mwanza.

By rail note:
The train journey from Zambia to Dar es Salaam or Dar es Salaam to Mwanza are very long (around 50 hours) and there are frequent delays. Trains get very crowded and travellers should take special care of their baggage. Always travel in First Class in a two or four sleeper compartment. When the train crosses the border between the two countries, immigration officials board the train to complete border formalities.
